Colonial Williamsburg and
Assateague Island
Day 1:
Today we left for our first stop around 8 A.M. We stopped for lunch at a rest stop along the Interstate and had sandwiches in the parking lot. We arrived at Greenbelt National Park in Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC, around 2 P.M. After setting up we went for a walk along a fitness trail. That night we told ghost stories around the fire.
Day 2:
Today we left for Chippokes Plantation State Park, Surry, VA at 9 A.M. We arrived at 1 P.M. We decided to scout out Williamsburg before we visit tomorrow. We took the free Jamestown-Scotland ferry across the James River and bought out tickets for Williams burg at the Visitors' Center.
Day 3:
Today we woke up early to visit Colonial Williamsburg. When we arrived we first listened to Patrick Henry speak. Then we toured the Governor's Palace and the gardens. Afterwards we had lunch at a Burger King near the Woodlands. It was also lunch time for the construction workers working on a hotel. It was wall-to-wall hard hats. The Robertson Windmill was our first stop after lunch. We also saw a few craftsmen. Following this we walked down the Duke of Gloucester Street, which was the main street, and visited some of the shops. We were able to see an Apothecary, medicine store, a wig maker, and a dress shop. We stopped at the Powell House next. There were a lot of hands-on activities and games there. Before we had dinner we visited the jail and the magazine. After we returned from dinner we saw a candle-light tour of the Peyton Randolph House. We also saw a funny puppet show at the Court House.
Day 4:
Today we visited Jamestown. We first saw the Indian village. One person was cooking corn cakes over the coals. Next, we went on the 3 ships the Discovery, Susan Constant, and Godspeed. The Jamestown fort had a lot of houses inside. We saw a Blacksmith making nails. Afterwards we went inside the gallery. We went back to the campground and walked around the plantation and the mansion's gardens. We are hoping to go to Williamsburg again tomorrow.
Day 5:
Today we went back to Williamsburg. Our first stop was the Wythe house. The house had a garden in the back. There was also a man cooking a full course meal in the kitchen. Inside the house a woman taught us how to play a card game. At the Magazi ne we saw a colonial sergeant teach some people how to load and fire and fire there training muskets, or sticks, which was very funny. Afterwards we headed to the other side of the town and visited the Public Hospital, and insane asylum. Next, we saw some more shops and went inside the Capitol. The Capitol housed the royal court and the House of Burgesses. We went back to the campground after the tour.
Day 6:
Today we left Chippokes Plantation and headed for Assateague Island State Park in Maryland, just beyond the Virginia border. We went over the 17.6 mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The whole trip took about 6 hours. After setting up we went down to the beach. It was warm out, but the water was still cold. When we drove around we found some ponies in the middle of the road. After dinner we all relaxed at our site.
Day 7:
This morning after breakfast we went to the Visitors' Center. We received some trail information. We walked over the bridge connecting the mainland with the island. We were able to see some ponies in the marsh across the bay. After we went food shopping we were on our way to a trail and we found some more ponies on the side of the road. The first 1/2 mile loop we hiked was the Life of the Forest. On the second 1/2 mile trail named The Life of the Marsh there was a pony that came right up to the boardwalk. We spent the rest of the day relaxing on the beach in the sun.
Day 8:
Today we left Assateague Island State Park and went home for Easter.
